MADISON, Wis. – The Northern Illinois University men's tennis team improved its record to 2-1 on the young season with a 5-2 victory over North Dakota Saturday at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wisconsin.
NIU claimed the doubles point to open the match with 7-6 set wins at both the number one and number three spots.
Bor Schweiger Muzar and
David Pata teamed up to get the win at number one while
Shao-Yu Yu and
Kristopher Ortega got the victory at the number three spot. In singles, the Huskies got wins at the No. 2, 3 and 4 from Ortega,
Mikko Malinen and Yu, respectively.
Victor Spolidorio added a 7-6, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles for the Huskies.
"This match was tight in doubles and singles," said NIU head coach
Patrick Fisher. "We blew two big leads in doubles at two and three before coming back to win at No. 3. North Dakota fought hard, they are a good team and will have a good season.
"To be honest we will have to step our game [Sunday] when we take on Wisconsin. Wisconsin is a good team and we're excited for the main event."
