League Recognizes NIU Softball for Community Service

Huskies touch all ages of DeKalb-Sycamore area

DEKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University Softball team earned the Mid-American Conference's Give Back Leadership Award for the week of Nov. 16-20 for its efforts in the DeKalb-Sycamore community.

"Our team culture is to grow as individuals and give back to the community," said NIU head coach Christina Sutcliffe. "This work is always important, but even more valuable during the times we find ourselves in now. I am proud of the work our team accomplishes and thankful the MAC has recognized them for their efforts."

This fall, and despite the COVID-19 pandemic, members of the Huskie softball team engaged in various community service projects both virtually and in-person when able.

The Huskies partnered with Cal's Angels, a Chicagoland pediatric cancer organization, to develop the social media campaign, "More Than Four" to raise awareness that only four percent of cancer research is directed to pediatric cancer. They also made over 30 blankets and 162 motivational cards as part of a care package given to local families with children battling cancer.

NIU softball players touched lives young and old, creating 216 homemade cards of encouragement for residents of the DeKalb Senior Center while taking part in a reading campaign for elementary students and mentoring DeKalb High School students.

Additionally, the Huskies created dog toys and assisted at a local animal shelter, while participating in several social justice and diversity and inclusion programs.

The Huskies wrapped up fall attending leadership and professional development seminars hosted by NIU's JobsPLUS and participated in a week-long interactive alumnae development event with NIU softball players from years past.

The 2020-21 Give Back Leadership Awards are presented each week to the MAC institution, sport program, or student-athlete that has demonstrated excellence in service and citizenship. The winners are selected by a representative of the MAC's Faculty Athletics Representatives.
