DeKALB, IL – The Northern Illinois University women's basketball team hits the hardwood for the first time in almost two weeks on Saturday afternoon as the Huskies take on the Western Michigan Broncos at the NIU Convocation Center. NIU (2-5, 0-2 MAC) last played on Dec. 20 in an 82-70 loss at now-nationally ranked Michigan State. The Spartans rode a big first quarter run to take a 23-12 lead. Sophomore forward
A'Jah Davis (DeKalb, Ill./Montverde Academy [Fla.]) led the Huskies with 16 points, adding three rebounds and three steals. In two Mid-American Conference games this season, Davis has averaged 11.5 points and 10 rebounds per game.
The Huskies lead the conference in three-pointers made heading into the new calendar year with 75 in seven games and are shooting 36.2 percent from long distance. Over half of NIU's points this season have come via the three-pointer. NIU is eighth in the country in three-pointers per game at 10.7. Redshirt-Junior guard
Janae Poisson (Matteson, Ill./Marian Catholic) is second in the MAC with 3.14 three-pointers per game and a 46.8 shooting percentage from the three-point line.
Western Michigan enters Saturday's game 1-3 on the season and 0-2 in MAC play following an 87-66 loss at Buffalo on Dec. 22. Maddie Watters and Reilly Jacobson each had a team-high 15 points for the Broncos against the Bulls. Jacobson leads Western Michigan in scoring, averaging 15.3 points per game. Taylor Williams is fifth in the MAC in rebounding with 8.3 rebounds per game. The Broncos lead the all-time series against NIU 40-27, winning both meetings last season after the Huskies swept the 2018-19 season series and defeated Western Michigan in the first round of the 2019 MAC Tournament.
Although fans are unable to attend NIU basketball games this season, you can still make your presence felt in the NIU Convocation Center by purchasing a cutout as part of the "Huskie Howl" presented by First National Bank of Omaha (FNBO). For just $60, fans can put their image on a cutout that will remain in place in the NIU Convocation Center for all NIU men's and women's basketball games during the 2020-21 season. Net proceeds from all fan cutouts will benefit the Huskie Athletic Fund.
