ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University women's team improved to 6-3 on the season with a 5-2 win against Chicago State University at the Boylan Tennis Center Friday.

"I was really proud of our effort again today," said NIU head coach Eric Burns. "Chicago State is a dangerous team and beat us last year, but we really fought today.

"We started a little slow in doubles but found a way to get the point. Doubles play has been key for this team and it really helped us again today."

Maria Potsi and Lara Slisko won at No. 1 doubles with a score of 6-3, while Brodie Walker and Paula Veyhle clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 victory at No. 2 doubles.

In singles, Potsi took the first set over Kristina Pukaheva 6-4, 6-1. After a loss at No. 2 singles, the Huskies took straight sets at Nos. 4, 6 and 5 to clinch the victory. Christy Robinson took the win over Katarina Dukic at No. 5 singles with a score of 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

NIU returns to the court Sunday, Feb. 16 when the Huskies travel to Joliet, Ill. to face St. Francis. The match will begin at 12:30 p.m. CT. NIU then heads to DePaul for a 5 p.m. contest with the Blue Demons.
