CHICAGO – The NIU women's team split a doubleheader against St. Francis (Ill.) and DePaul University Sunday.
The Huskies travelled to Challenge Fitness in Lockport, to face off against the St. Francis Fighting Saints where they earned a 7-0 victory.
NIU jumped off to a strong start with
Christy Robinson and
Mary Ellen Green taking a 6-0 victory at No. 2 doubles over Nikkie Christiansen and Michelle Robert.
Maria Potsi and
Lara Slisko clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles over Denisse Lizano and Maria Kuzminskaya.
In singles, Julia Dmitrieva posted an impressive victory of 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.
Paula Veyhle clinched the victory for the Huskies with a win at No. 3 singles over Nikkie Christiansen with a score of 6-2, 6-0.
Following the victory, NIU travelled to Lakeshore Sport & Fitness in Chicago to face the DePaul Blue Demons.
The Huskies faced adversity having lost the doubles point with a 0-6 loss at No. 1 doubles as well as a 2-6 loss at No. 3 doubles.
In singles,
Christy Robinson had the closest match of the evening but fell short to Marija Jovicic at No. 4 singles with a score of 4-6, 4-6.
Lara Slisko suffered a 0-6, 2-6 setback at No. 6 singles while
Fernanda Naves fell at No. 2 singles, 2-6, 2-6.
NIU returns to the court Saturday, Feb. 22 in a doubleheader. The Huskies will travel to Peoria to take on Western Illinois and Bradley at The Clubs at River City.
