PEORIA, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University women's team was edged by Bradley, 4-3 at The Clubs at River City Saturday.
NIU (7-5) got off to a strong start winning the doubles point by sweeping all three matches.
Jovana Peric and Julia Dmitrieva posted a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles, while
Maria Potsi and
Fernanda Naves posted a 6-4 victory at No. 2 doubles.
Brodie Walker and
Paula Veyhle added a 7-6 victory at No. 3 singles.
The Huskies were dealt a blow early in singles play as
Jovana Peric was forced to retire in the second set at No. 2 singles. With NIU leading 2-1 after a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles by Walker, Bradley posted wins at Nos. 1 & 5 singles to take a 3-2 lead.
Veyhle's 7-6, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles tied the match at 3-3. However, Bradley's Natalia Barbery earned a 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 at No. 3 singles to clinch the match for the Braves.
NIU returns to the court Saturday, Feb. 29 when the Huskies travel to Indianapolis for a doubleheader against Butler and IUPUI. NIU will take on the Bulldogs at 10 a.m. and the Jaguars at 5:30 p.m. All times listed are Central.
