NIU Women’s Tennis Splits Doubleheader

Huskies fall to Omaha, defeat Doane

Box Score 1 OMAHA, Neb. – The Northern Illinois women's tennis team split its doubleheader with Omaha and Doane at the Miracle Hill Tennis Center Sunday.

The Huskies suffered a 4-3 loss against Omaha in the morning before shutting out Doane University 7-0 in the afternoon contest.

"Tough loss today to Omaha," said NIU head coach Eric Burns. "Our girls really battled hard. It was a big improvement from yesterday's effort. We had match point and unfortunately got a tough call that went against us. Those things happen, but it shouldn't take away from how well we fought. Omaha is a good team, but we definitely had our chances to get this one and couldn't close it out.

"We have to work on being consistent with our effort and energy as a team and we need to close out leads better."

NIU got off to a solid start against the Mavericks, taking the doubles point. After the Huskies experienced a loss at No. 2 doubles, Christy Robinson and Fernanda Naves finished with a 6-3 win over Omaha's Savanna Crowell and Emily Behling at No. 3 doubles, while Maria Potsi and Lara Slisko earned a 7-6 victory at No. 1 doubles against Omaha's Ines Absisan and Madison Gallegos.

After a loss at No. 6 singles, Potsi earned the win at No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Madison Gallegos. Her teammate Christy Robinson followed soon after with a win at No. 4 singles with a score of 7-5, 7-6 (7-4). Unfortunately for the Huskies, NIU suffered losses in three straight sets at Nos. 2, 3, and 5 to give Omaha with the win, 4-3.

The Huskies rebounded in their second match of the day, jumping off to a good start winning the doubles point taking all three matches. Potsi and Slisko as well as Robinson and Mary Ellen Green pulled off impressive wins of 6-0 at Nos. 1 and 3, respectively.
