Box Score 1 OMAHA, Neb. – The Northern Illinois women's tennis team split its doubleheader with Omaha and Doane at the Miracle Hill Tennis Center Sunday.
The Huskies suffered a 4-3 loss against Omaha in the morning before shutting out Doane University 7-0 in the afternoon contest.
"Tough loss today to Omaha," said NIU head coach
Eric Burns. "Our girls really battled hard. It was a big improvement from yesterday's effort. We had match point and unfortunately got a tough call that went against us. Those things happen, but it shouldn't take away from how well we fought. Omaha is a good team, but we definitely had our chances to get this one and couldn't close it out.
"We have to work on being consistent with our effort and energy as a team and we need to close out leads better."
NIU got off to a solid start against the Mavericks, taking the doubles point. After the Huskies experienced a loss at No. 2 doubles,
Christy Robinson and
Fernanda Naves finished with a 6-3 win over Omaha's Savanna Crowell and Emily Behling at No. 3 doubles, while
Maria Potsi and
Lara Slisko earned a 7-6 victory at No. 1 doubles against Omaha's Ines Absisan and Madison Gallegos.
After a loss at No. 6 singles, Potsi earned the win at No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Madison Gallegos. Her teammate
Christy Robinson followed soon after with a win at No. 4 singles with a score of 7-5, 7-6 (7-4). Unfortunately for the Huskies, NIU suffered losses in three straight sets at Nos. 2, 3, and 5 to give Omaha with the win, 4-3.
The Huskies rebounded in their second match of the day, jumping off to a good start winning the doubles point taking all three matches. Potsi and Slisko as well as Robinson and
Mary Ellen Green pulled off impressive wins of 6-0 at Nos. 1 and 3, respectively.
Potsi closed out her weekend with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Doane's Ava Macke at No. 1 singles, leaving her undefeated on the day. Julia Dmitrieva displayed a strong win, defeating Brylee Lauby, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Robinson and
Paula Veyhle also won in straight sets at 6-0, 6-0 at Nos. 3 and 4, respectively.
The NIU women's tennis team will be back in action Friday, Feb. 14 against Chicago State University at the Boylan Tennis Center in Rockford, Ill. The match will begin at 1 p.m. CT.
