BUFFALO – The NIU women's tennis team took home two wins in a doubleheader in western New York Friday.
 
The Huskies defeated Binghamton University, 6-1, in the first match of the day in Buffalo before heading to Olean where they scored a 6-1 win over St. Bonaventure.
 
Brodie Walker and Paula Veyhle started doubles play out strong against the Bearcats with a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles. Lara Slisko and Maria Potsi clinched the doubles point at No. 2 doubles, having won 6-4.
 
The Huskies found their stride in singles play early on, with Veyhle earning a strong win over Binghamton's Julia Gumieniak 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 singles. Walker earned NIU a point at No. 4 singles with a 6-1, 6-3 victory. Christy Robinson clinched the victory by beating Kyra Bergmann at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-3.
 
In the second match of the day, Walker and Veyhle started doubles play in the right direction with a 6-1 victory at No. 3 doubles. Potsi and Fernanda Naves earned NIU the doubles' point with a win at No. 2 doubles, 6-4.
 
Potsi opened up singles play with a win, pushing St. Bonaventure's Penelope Abreu to three sets at No. 1 singles, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Walker sent her own match at No. 4 singles to three sets, winning it 1-6, 6-4, 6-3. Jovana Peric clinched the victory for NIU over Amerlia Haley at No. 2 singles, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.
 
NIU head coach Eric Burns was pleased with his team's performance.
 
"We are so proud of the effort today," Burns. "These were two solid wins and the girls competed extremely hard all day."
 
The NIU returns to the court Wednesday, March 11 when they face off in Chicago against UIC. The match will begin at 10 a.m. CT.
