DeKALB, IL – The Northern Illinois University women's basketball team begins a four-game road swing this weekend when it heads to Macomb, Ill. for this season's Compass Challenge, hosted by Western Illinois.
The Huskies take on the Leathernecks Friday night at 6 p.m., then either Southern Illinois or Eastern Illinois on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. Both games will be broadcast locally on WLBK 98.9 FM/1360 AM with live video on Western Illinois' athletics website.
NIU (3-1) kept its home record perfect last Sunday with a 69-50 win over Milwaukee at the Convocation Center. It was the lowest points allowed by the Huskies since an 88-47 win over Bowling Green on Feb. 6, 2019. Through four games, NIU is third in the Mid-American Conference in both scoring defense at 59.8 points per game and field goal percentage defense at 36.8 percent.
Chelby Koker (Racine, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) led NIU with 18 points and three assists in the win over the Panthers. She is fifth in the MAC in scoring this season, averaging 19 points per game.
A'Jah Davis (DeKalb, Ill./Montverde Academy [Fla.]) had her third double-double of the season with 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Davis leads the league in rebounding with 10.8 per game.
The Huskies won both of their games at last season's Compass Challenge at Eastern Illinois, defeating EIU 82-72 and WIU 79-67. NIU is 4-2 all-time in the event. Western Illinois enters the weekend 5-2 after a 63-59 loss at Incarnate Word Monday night, which snapped a five-game winning streak. Senior guard Danni Nichols leads the Leathernecks in scoring at 16.3 points per game. Eastern Illinois is 4-3 to start the year following a loss to Utah in the University of Hawai'I Tournament last Sunday. Southern Illinois is 1-2 on the season after a 78-67 win at Southeast Missouri State Tuesday night.
