NIU Women’s Tennis Notch First W of the Season

Huskies earn 7-0 win over UW-Whitewater

DEKALB, Ill. – In its first action in over a month, the Northern Illinois University women's tennis team scored a 7-0 victory over Wisconsin-Whitewater at Chick Evans Field House in the home opener Friday night.

"I thought this was a great way to get back competing," said NIU head coach Eric Burns. "For a first match back from our pause, we played really well. We had great energy on the court and that's important for us. I definitely think we have some things to work on and need some matches to get back to where we were, but I'm really pleased with the effort tonight.

"UW Whitewater is a solid program and really made us work today. I was really impressed with their effort and appreciate them playing us on short notice."

NIU (1-3) opened up a 1-0 lead after taking the doubles point with all three Huskie doubles teams scoring a victory.

Diana Lukyanova won the first single match, scoring a 6-1, 6-0 win over Olivia Kraft at No. 3 singles. Anastasia Rakita defeated Paige Nierman, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 2 singles to give NIU a 3-0 advantage. Maria Potsi's 6-0, 6-3 victory over Kasey Schlicht at No. 1 singles clinched the win for NIU.

Fernanda Naves posted a 6-2, 6-2 straight set win at No. 5 singles over Molly Rueth, while at No. 6 singles, Paula Veyhle earned a 6-2, 6-0 victory. Chrirty Robinson completed the sweep with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles.

The Huskies return to the court Sunday when NIU travels to Milwaukee, Wis. for a doubleheader. NIU will face Milwaukee at 1 p.m. and Marquette at 6 p.m.
