PHOENIX – The Northern Illinois University softball team dropped the final game of its eight-game Arizona road trip to Baylor, 8-1, on the final day of the Lopes Up Classic at GCU Softball Stadium on Saturday.
NIU (5-8) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a solo shot in the bottom of the first inning. Unfortunately for the Huskies, the lead was short lived.
Baylor posted three runs in the top of the second to take a 3-1 advantage. The Bears added two more runs three innings later and capped the scoring with a three-run seventh.
The top of the Huskie order provided the pop, but the bottom was unable to get going. The first four Huskie batters went a combined 5-for-11 with an RBI, however, the next five batters went 0-for-14.
"All in all, it was a great week of learning for our team," NIU head coach
Christina Sutcliffe said. "We feel prepared and ready for MAC to start."
The Huskies return to action Friday when NIU travels to Athens, Ohio for the Mid-American Conference opener. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. The Huskie will play four games against the Bobcats, with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 12 p.m. and a single game on Sunday at 11 a.m. All times listed are Central.
