Box Score NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. – The No. 48 ranked Northern Illinois University men's tennis team returned to action with a 6-1 victory over Niagara University on Friday afternoon (April 9). With the win, NIU improved to 18-2 on the season, the most wins for the program since the 2014-15 campaign.
The Huskies edged the doubles point as
Kristopher Ortega and
Oliver Valentinsson claimed a 6-1 win at number two over William Gothlin and Bruno Goncalves, their team-best 15th win of the season. Niagara took the match at number three before
Bor Schweiger Muzar and
Mikael Vollbach outlasted Manuel Alonso and Jorge Sedeno, 7-6, at number one to give NIU the first point of the day.
Ortega put the first singles point on the board with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Sedeno at number two. Valentinsson then scored a 6-3, 6-4 win against Gothlin at number three and NIU ensured the overall victory when
Luke VanDonslear finished a 7-5, 6-2 triumph over Eduardo Villalpando at number six.
Victor Spolidorio secured a 6-3, 6-3 win against Pere Padro, playing at number five and
Armin Koschtojan was victorious, 6-4, 6-3, against Roberto Vaca at number four. The Purple Eagles claimed the match at number one in three sets to avoid the sweep.
NIU will return to action on Sunday afternoon, April 11, when the Huskies return to Mid-American Conference play at Buffalo.
