Huskies Host Toledo In Opener Of Saturday Doubleheader

NIU Takes On First Place Rockets On Alumni Day

DeKALB, IL – The Northern Illinois University women's basketball team is back in action at the NIU Convocation Center on Saturday when the Huskies take on Mid-American Conference leaders Toledo for Alumni Day. Tip-off is at 1 p.m. CT with the game available locally on WLBK 98.9 FM/1360 AM as well as the NIU Huskies app and ESPN3. It's the first game of a doubleheader with the NIU men's basketball team taking on Eastern Michigan at 3:30 p.m.
 
NIU (4-7, 1-2 MAC) earned its first road win of the season last Saturday, hanging on for a 71-68 win at Ohio. Redshirt-Senior guard Janae Poisson (Matteson, Ill./Marian Catholic) led four Huskies in double-figure scoring with a season-high 20 points. Poisson made a career-high six three-pointers on the day. She enters the week leading the Mid-American Conference with 3.55 three-pointers per game, which puts her fifth in the country. Over the last six games, Poisson is averaging 14.7 points per game while shooting 33.3 percent from long range.
 
Junior guard Chelby Koker had her third double-double of the season against the Bobcats with 13 points and 12 rebounds. She also had a game-high seven assists. Koker was 6-for-6 from the free throw line at Ohio, making four free throws late in the game to secure the win. She is second in the nation in free throw percentage at 97.7 percent after making 28 straight foul shots. Koker is also now at 951 career points, 49 away from 1,000. She earned her second MAC Female Scholar Athlete of the Week award on Wednesday.
 
The Huskies had their largest rebound margin of the season last Saturday, outrebounding Ohio by 19 53-34. It was the fourth time this season NIU had a +10 rebound margin. NIU leads the league in rebounding with 43.27 per game. A'Jah Davis (DeKalb, Ill./Montverde Academy [Fla.]) had her fourth straight double-double at Ohio with 13 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Davis leads the MAC with 11.5 rebounds per game which puts her 12th in the country. In three conference games so far this season Davis is averaging 14.7 rebounds per game.
 
Toledo (11-3, 5-0 MAC) stayed perfect in MAC play Wednesday night with a 74-49 win over Central Michigan at Savage Arena. Junior guard Quinesha Lockett led the Rockets with 24 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Lockett is ninth in the MAC in scoring at 17.6 points per game. Toledo leads the MAC in scoring defense at 57.7 points per game and field goal percentage defense at 34.9 percent.
