Mason Kauffman (Stratford, Wis./Stratford/Eastern Michigan) won his 10th match out of his last 12 Friday night but it was the Central Michigan Chippewas that came away with the 33-6 dual meet win over the Northern Illinois University wrestling team Friday night at Victor E. Court.
Kauffman took down Bret Fedewa of the Chippewas in the first period of the 174-pound bout and led 3-1 after two periods. Fedewa earned an escape early in the third period to put the score at 3-2. Kauffman took down Fedewa once again to make the score 5-2 and went on to win 5-3.
Michael Kaminski (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) earned NIU's other match win on the evening at 133 pounds. After a scoreless first period against Central Michigan's Vince Perez, Kaminski started the second with an escape and later took down Perez to go up 3-0. Perez got within a point at 3-2 in the third, but Kaminski took down Perez twice in the final period and got the 8-3 win with riding time.
"Mason was able to break through holds and pop into his leg attacks and that made him succesful tonight," said head coach
Ryan Ludwig. "Mike Kaminski did a nice job getting to his attacks. It was great to see his hard work paying off."
NIU is back in action at Victor E. Court on Sunday, Jan. 23 to host the #17 Oklahoma Sooners at 12 p.m. The dual will be broadcast on ESPN+.
