DeKALB, IL – The Northern Illinois University women's basketball team is back on the NIU Convocation Center floor Wednesday morning when the Huskies host the Kent State Golden Flashes at 11 a.m. for Education Day. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ as well as locally on WLBK 98.9 FM/1360 AM and the NIU Huskies App.
NIU (6-9, 3-4 MAC) comes into Wednesday's game on a two-game winning streak after defeating Akron 79-67 Monday night at the Convocation Center. The Huskies shot 44.6 percent from the field and made a season-high 22 free throws in the win over the Zips. NIU leads the Mid-American Conference in free throw shooting at 77.1 percent, which puts it 24
th in the country. The Huskies have shot 83.7 percent from the foul line over the last five games.
Junior guard
Chelby Koker (Racine, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) led all scorers last night with 28 points, adding six rebounds and a game-high six assists. She scored her 1,000
th career point midway through the first quarter and now has 1,023 career points. It was her eighth game this season with at least 10 points, five rebounds and four assists.
Wednesday's game features the top two teams in the MAC in rebound margin. Kent State leads the league with a +8.94 margin with NIU second at +3.67. The Huskies lead the MAC in rebounding at 42.8 rebounds per game.
A'Jah Davis (DeKalb, Ill./Montverde Academy [Fla.]) leads the MAC with 11.9 rebounds per game, which puts her fourth in the nation. Davis has had eight straight games with double-digit rebounds after posting 18 points and a season-high 18 rebounds in the win over Akron Monday.
Kent State (10-6, 2-5 MAC) was picked to finish fourth in the MAC in the preseason but are 2-5 in the league after a 65-62 loss at Buffalo on January 17. Freshman forward Bridget Dunn led four Golden Flashes in double figure scoring with 13 points against the Bulls. Casey Santoro and Lindsey Thall each added 11 points. That duo leads Kent State in scoring, averaging 12.9 points per game each. Kent State is third in the MAC in scoring defense, allowing 60.3 points per game.
