DeKALB, IL – The Northern Illinois University women's basketball team looks to continue its longest winning streak of the season Saturday afternoon when the Huskies travel to Buffalo to take on the Buffalo Bulls at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3 with the radio call locally on WSQR 92.9 FM/1180 AM as well as the Varsity Network app.
NIU (7-9, 4-4 MAC) won its third straight game on the bounce Wednesday morning, a 61-55 victory over the Kent State Golden Flashes at the Convocation Center. The 55 points allowed were a season-low for the Huskies who held Kent State to just 6-for-34 from the three-point line. NIU made six of eight free throws in the final 0:32 seconds to break a 55-55 tie to get the win on Wednesday. The Huskies have shot over 80 percent from the free throw line over the last six games and sit atop the Mid-American Conference in free throw percentage at 77.1 percent.
During their current three-game winning streak, the Huskies are averaging 75.0 points per game and won by an average of nine points. They have also held a +9.0 rebound edge over that stretch. NIU has been particularly effective in the second quarter over the last three games, outscoring the opposition 59-34. Junior forward
A'Jah Davis (DeKalb, Ill./Montverde Academy [Fla.]) has averaged 19.0 points and 12.7 rebounds over the last three games. Davis led NIU with 16 points and seven rebounds in Wednesday's win. She leads the conference in both rebounding at 11.6 per game and field goal percentage at 51.0 percent. Davis had 17 points and a career-high 19 rebounds in NIU's win over Buffalo at the Convocation Center last season.
Buffalo (11-7, 5-3 MAC) enters Saturday's game on the heels of a 72-70 loss to Ball State Wednesday night at home at Alumni Arena. Freshman guard Georgia Woolley led the Bulls with 24 points as Dyaisha Fair added 22. Fair is second in the MAC in scoring at 22.2 points per game, and is also third in the MAC with 2.7 made three-pointers per game. As a team Buffalo is second in the conference in scoring, averaging 75.6 points per game. The Bulls are also second in the MAC in rebounding at 40.4 rebounds per game, with NIU leading the way at 42.4.
The Huskies are on the road again on Monday, Jan. 31 for a 6 p.m. game at Western Michigan. That is a makeup of the game originally scheduled for Jan. 12. NIU returns to the Convocation Center on Wednesday, Feb. 2 to take on Bowling Green for National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
