DeKALB, IL – The Northern Illinois University women's basketball team opens a stretch of four games out of the next five on the road Saturday when the Huskies travel to Athens, Ohio to take on the Ohio Bobcats. Tip-off from Ohio's Convocation Center is at 12 p.m. CT with the game broadcast on ESPN3 as well as locally on WSQR 92.9 FM/1180 AM as well as the Varsity Network app.
NIU (3-7, 0-2 MAC) erased a nine-point fourth quarter deficit Wednesday night to force overtime against Ball State, but the Cardinals scored with 1.3 seconds left in the extra session to take the win 83-82.
Chelby Koker (Racine, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) led all scorers with 28 points, adding six rebounds and three assists. It was her 34
th straight game scoring in double figures. She now has 938 career points which puts her 62 away from becoming NIU's 33
rd 1,000-point scorer.
A'Jah Davis (DeKalb, Ill./Montverde Academy [Fla.]) had her third straight double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds against Ball State. It was her seventh double-double of the year. In the last three games Davis is averaging 20.3 points and 14.0 rebounds per game while shooting 58.7 percent from the field.
Ohio (6-3, 0-0 MAC) was picked to win the Mid-American Conference in the preseason. The Bobcats have had their first three conference games postponed. Ohio was last in action at the FIU Holiday Hoops Showdown December 20-21, defeating UMass Lowell 74-60 and Binghamton 76-67. Senior guard Cece Hooks is second in the MAC in scoring, averaging 23.6 points per game. As a team the Bobcats lead the league with 81.6 points per game, 9.6 three-pointers per game and 12.44 steals per game.
The Huskies go back on the road on Wednesday, January 12 for a 6 p.m. showdown at Western Michigan.
