WBB - Tara Stauffacher vs DePaul
Scott Walstrom, NIU

Women's Basketball | November 14

DeKALB, IL – The Northern Illinois University women's basketball team continues its current three-game homestand Tuesday morning at 11 a.m. against the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles at the NIU Convocation Center.

For tickets, log on to NIU Huskies.com or call the NIU Athletics Ticket Office at 815-753-PACK (7225). Tuesday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+, as well as 94-9 WDKB and the NIU Huskies app.

NIU (1-1) is currently on a six-game home-court winning streak after last Saturday's 86-79 win over DePaul. It was the Huskies' first win over the Blue Demons since 1994. NIU rallied from an 11-point second quarter deficit to get its first win of the 2022-23 campaign, making 13 three-pointers and shooting 52.5 percent from the field. The Huskies also took care of the basketball, committing just 11 turnovers while distributing 22 assists.

Senior guard Chelby Koker (Racine, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) led the Huskies with 24 points, three steals and a game-high six assists. Koker scored 13 of her 24 points in the second half to lead the comeback. She was 4-for-6 from the three-point line. It was her 20th career game with at least 20 points. A'Jah Davis (DeKalb, Ill./Montverde Academy [Fla.]) added 20 points and a team-high five rebounds. Saturday's win marked the fourth time in their careers that Koker and Davis both scored at least 20 points in the same game.

NIU got a big lift from its bench in Saturday's game. Led by 16 points from Janae Poisson (Matteson, Ill./Marian Catholic) and a career-high 10 from Tara Stauffacher (Columbus, Wis./Wisconsin), NIU's reserves outscored the DePaul bench 28-15. Poisson made four threes in a game for the 20th time in her career. The 2021 Mid-American Conference Sixth Player of the Year is averaging 15.0 points per game off the bench to open the season. Poisson is 36 points away from reaching 1,000 for her career.

Southern Indiana is 2-0 to start its first season in Division I after reclassifying from Division II. The Screaming Eagles opened their year with an 87-39 win over Oakland City on Nov. 7 and followed it up with an 88-75 win over Western Illinois last Friday, racing out to a 21-9 lead after the first quarter. Senior forward Hannah Haithcock led Southern Indiana with 22 points as Vanessa Shafford added 16 points and five rebounds.

Tuesday's game marks the first meeting between the Huskies and Screaming Eagles. NIU will face three other first-time opponents this season in Navy, Richmond and Lindenwood.

The Huskies close out their three-game homestand on Thursday, Nov. 17 against Western Illinois. Tip-off is at 6 p.m.
