DeKALB, Ill. – To conclude the regular season, the Northern Illinois University volleyball team faces Western Michigan Wednesday night in Kalamazoo at 5 p.m. CT.
NIU (17-10, 10-7 MAC) remains in control of its own destiny as the team hunts a bid to the 2022 Mid-American Conference Tournament. Since the MAC takes the top-6 seeds and NIU is currently the No. 6 seed, if the Huskies beat Western Michigan, a bid is guaranteed.
NIU is coming off a two-win weekend against Eastern Michigan (18-10, 11-6 MAC) where two Huskies surpassed massive milestones.
Katie Jablonski (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland) and
Ella Mihacevich (Brunswick, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) cracked 1,000-career kills and assists, respectively.
The History: WMU owns a slight edge in the all-time series as NIU trails 33-34. Earlier this season, the Huskies wrangled WMU in a five-set thriller (27-25, 21-25, 25-14,19-25, 15-9) on Sept. 27, 2022, at Victor E. Court. Jablonski (17),
Brianna Scuric (10),
Sammi Lockwood (11),
Charli Atiemo (11) and
Emily Dykes (19) all reached double-digit kills. The last time NIU beat Western Michigan in Kalamazoo was Oct. 31, 2018.
Scouting WMU: Western Michigan (16-13, 8-9 MAC), No. 8 in the MAC, heads into its Senior Night matchup with NIU coming off a pair of losses to Central Michigan (18-10, 11-6 MAC) last weekend - the Broncos dropped each match in five frames. The weekend prior to those contests however, WMU swept Eastern Michigan twice on its home floor.
