DeKALB, IL – Winners of five of its last seven games, the Northern Illinois University women's basketball team travels to face the Bowling Green Falcons Wednesday night at 6 p.m. at Stroh Center. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
NIU (9-11, 6-6 MAC) locked up a season series sweep of Ohio on Sunday with an 80-70 win over the Bobcats on Sunday at the Convocation Center. The Huskies had five players score in double figures in the win led by
A'Jah Davis (DeKalb, Ill./Montverde Academy [Fla.]) and
Nia Ahart (Detroit, Mich./Colgate) who both had a team-high 16 points. Davis added a game-high 13 rebounds while Ahart nearly had a triple-double with a game-high eight assists and seven rebounds.
Mikayla Brandon (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) and
Janae Poisson (Matteson, Ill./Marian Catholic) had 12 points apiece against Ohio on Sunday. Brandon dished out a career-high five assists and had seven rebounds. Poisson scored in double figures for the seventh time in the last eight games. Redshirt-freshman guard
Sidney McCrea (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Prairie) had 11 points off the bench.
The Huskies outrebounded Ohio by 17, 49-32, on Sunday. It was the second-highest rebound margin for NIU this season and the eighth time this season the Huskies outrebounded an opponent by double digits. NIU leads the MAC in rebounding at 42.4 rebounds per game, which puts the Huskies 21
st in the nation. Davis is ninth nationally with 11.7 rebounds per game.
Bowling Green (10-9, 5-5 MAC) won the last meeting between the two teams last week 64-54 at the Convocation Center. NIU had won the last seven meetings in the series. The Falcons are 5-5 in the Mid-American Conference after a 91-80 loss at Ball State last Saturday, despite shooting 49.2 percent from the field for the game. Amy Velasco was 5-for-6 from the three-point line in scoring a team-high 21 points. The Falcons have four players averaging double-figure scoring for the season led by Kadie Hempfling's 11.3 points per game. Bowling Green leads the MAC in field goal percentage at 45.0 percent and is third in scoring with 73.5 points per game.
NIU is back at the Convocation Center on Saturday, Feb. 12 when the Buffalo Bulls come to DeKalb for a 1 p.m. game on Play 4 Kay Day. The game is the first of a doubleheader with the NIU men's basketball team taking on Toledo at 3:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at NIUHuskies.com/MyHuskies or by calling the NIU Athletics Ticket Office at 815-753-PACK (7225).
