TOLEDO, Ohio – The Northern Illinois University women's tennis team opened a three-match road trip Friday with a 6-1 loss at Mid-American Conference favorite Toledo.
With two of its top three players unavailable for Friday's match, the Huskies were forced to shuffle their line-up in both singles and doubles, moving three players up and inserting seniors
Fernanda Naves and
Iuliia Dmitrieva into the No. 5 and 6 singles spots, respectively.
Dmitrieva responded with a 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 win over Toledo's Eileen Carney at No. 6 singles to score the Huskies' lone point. She also teamed with
Reagan Welch at No. 2 doubles as the two recorded a 6-2 victory over the UT duo of Laura Morera and Patricia Panta. However, NIU dropped the doubles point with losses at No. 1 and No. 3.
"Everyone fought hard today, it was a pretty good effort given the situation," said NIU head coach
Eric Burns. "It's tough to beat a team down one top player and two makes it pretty much impossible. I thought we competed well, and the doubles looked improved. We'll try to take some of those positives into Sunday and get ready for Buffalo and Binghamton."
NIU (12-7, 0-2 MAC) continues its road swing on Sunday in Buffalo when the Huskies take on the University at Buffalo and Binghamton in Buffalo at Noon and 5:30 p.m., respectively.
