MADISON, Wis. – The Northern Illinois University women's soccer team played even with Wisconsin for over an hour before a trio of late goals lifted the Badgers to a 3-0 victory over the Huskies on Monday night (Sept. 12) at the McClimon Soccer Complex.
With the victory, Wisconsin improved to 5-1-2 on the season while the Huskies dropped to 2-2-2.
NIU goalkeeper
Deighton Wamer (Oregon, Ohio/Clay) called into action for the first time in the ninth minute, stopping by shot by Rylee Howard.
The Huskie goalkeeper then made a pair of saves on Natalie Viggiano, one in the 23rd minute and another in the 34th as NIU and Wisconsin went into the intermission scoreless.
First minute after the break, Howard had another effort on target that was stopped by
Sadie McGill (Fort Worth, Texas/L.D. Bell), who came on at halftime for Wamer.
The contest remained scoreless as McGill made a stop on Viggiano in the 53rd minute and another on Howard in the 64th minute, conceding a corner on the chance from Howard.
From the corner, the Badgers finally broke the deadlock as Aidan McConnell whipped in the corner toward the penalty spot and Emma Jaskaniec directed it on target from close range for her sixth goal of the season.
Adee Boer added another goal for Wisconsin just three minutes later. A cross came in from the right side and deflected toward the top of the six-yard box where Boer pounced and fired home a second for the hosts.
Wisconsin added a third with a quarter-hour to play as a cross came in from the left from Riley Philbin to Claire Odmark who swept a shot on the volley past a diving McGill to give the Badgers a 3-0 lead.
In the final minute,
Madison Frazer (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East) had a chance to end the shutout for the Huskies, but her effort was stopped by Wisconsin goalkeeper Erin McKinney.
Wamer made three stops for the Huskies; McGill finished with six saves for NIU while McKinney made one while collecting the clean sheet for Wisconsin.
NIU will conclude the non-conference portion of its schedule Sunday, Sept. 18, when the Huskies travel to meet Chicago State. Kickoff against the Cougars is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Gwendolyn Brooks College Prep.
