DEKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University women's soccer team puts its four-match unbeaten streak on the line Friday, Sept. 9, as the Huskies host Western Illinois at the NIU Soccer Complex. Game time against the Leathernecks is scheduled for 7 p.m. and admission is free of charge.
Following Friday's contest, NIU will travel to Wisconsin on Monday, Sept. 12, for a matchup that was added to the schedule following the cancelation of the Indiana State game (Aug. 21).
"Tomorrow is another big game for us, an in-state game," said NIU head coach
Michael O'Neill. "We aren't going to complicate it too much, just more of the same from our team, (hoping) to continue from a good result last Sunday. The girls have been working hard and starting to find some consistency with areas of the game we have been working on since preseason and early in the season. We are hoping to come out and start and finish the game as we did last Sunday."
NIU extended its unbeaten run with a 2-1 victory at Eastern Illinois last Sunday (Sept. 4).
Madison Looby (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel Catholic Central) and
Abby Adams (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) each scored their first career goal in the win over the Panthers. Freshman goalkeeper
Deighton Wamer (Oregon, Ohio/Clay) made seven saves in the victory.
The current four-game unbeaten streak for the Huskies is the longest for NIU since 2014, when the Huskies had a five-game unbeaten streak, and the longest to start a season since 2008, when the Huskies were unbeaten in their first seven matches.
Western Illinois brings a 0-2-3 mark into Friday's matchup. Amy Andrews has scored a pair of goals to lead the Leatherneck offense. NIU will be the second Mid-American Conference opponent for Western Illinois this season as it opened the year with a 2-2 draw at Eastern Michigan.
Wisconsin comes into the weekend with a 3-1-2 overall record and will host Milwaukee on Thursday (Sept. 5) before welcoming the Huskies to Madison. Emma Jaskaniec leads the Badgers in scoring with four goals this season. The Huskies and Wisconsin met in an exhibition match on Friday, Aug. 12, but will meet for the first time in the regular season since 2017.
NIU will have one more non-conference match after meeting Western Illinois and Wisconsin as the Huskies travel to Chicago State on Sunday, Sept. 18.
