Huskies To Face UMKC, Wichita State in KC Roos Classic

NIU went 1-2 in last weekend's Popcorn Classic

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Northern Illinois University volleyball team (3-3, 0-0 MAC) heads to the "City of Fountains" this weekend for the KC Roos Classic which will take place at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Along with UMKC and the Huskies, the Wichita State Shockers will be participating as well.

NIU enters the tournament after going 1-2 in the Popcorn classic this past weekend. The Huskies beat Campbell in four sets before falling to SIUE and Valparaiso the following day.

Sammi Lockwood (Cary, Ill./Prairie Ridge) led NIU on the offensive side of the net with 3.08 kills per set over the weekend, the highest on the squad. She added 12 blocks along with five set assists in her three matches started. On defense, Francesca Bertucci (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle) averaged 4.62 digs per set for a grand total of 60. She's pacing the conference in total digs with 120. Ella Mihacevich (Brunswick, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) had a fantastic weekend as well - the starting setter posted three 40+ set assist performances along with breaking her career-high in set assists versus Valpo (48). She averaged an astounding 10.2 set assists per set through the tourney.

The hosts of the KC Roos Classic, UMKC, own a 3-4 overall mark and most recently went 2-1 in the Tulane Classic. UMKC began the tournament with a three-set loss to Ohio, but rebounded by beating Tulane and Howard to finish off the weekend. On Wednesday, the Roos hosted No. 19 Kansas and played a competitive four-set match, but fell after hitting just .008.

The Shockers are 3-3 and are currently taking part in the Kansas Invitational where they'll also face Kansas – that match starts tonight at 6:30 p.m. This morning, WSU was swept by UNLV in three sets. Wichita State has yet to play a home match and has faced some tough competition, including No. 18 Creighton in the Rumble in the Rockies, to whom they lost.

The Huskies will face UMKC Friday at 7p.m. and Wichita State Saturday at 11 a.m. Live Video will be streamed for the UMKC match while Live Stats will be available for both matches.

Season Tickets start at $30 in the general admission. A Huskie Four-Pack is available at $22.50 per ticket, with a minimum of four season tickets purchased.
