LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Northern Illinois University women's tennis team closed out the opening weekend of its dual match season by dropping a 6-1 decision to the University of Kentucky Sunday afternoon at the Hillary J. Boone Indoor Tennis Center in Lexington.
Kentucky won the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles while NIU's No. 2 duo of Nataly Miroslavova Ninova and Reagan Welch had battled to a 3-3 score through six games.
Welch also earned the Huskies' lone point when her opponent retired with Welch leading the match 3-1. NIU's No. 1 player, Erika Dimitriev, played well in a loss to UK's Elizabeth Stevens as she took seven games before falling 6-3, 6-4.
With the loss, the Huskies fell to 0-3 on the year while Kentucky improved to 3-1.
NIU returns to action Friday, January 27 in the Nelson Tennis Center at Chick Evans Field House when they take on Chicago State at 9 a.m. and Eastern Illinois at 6 p.m.
