TULSA, Okla. -- The Northern Illinois University men's tennis team traveled to Tulsa, Okla., for Intercollegiate Tennis Association's All-American Championships. Four Huskies competed in the event, which includes the top 400 players in the nation, and
Mikael Vollbach (Rothis, Austria) highlighted the event for NIU with a pair of victories in the Pre-Qualifying draw.
Vollbach opened the tournament by picking up a 6-2, 6-4 win against Texas A&M's Grant Lothringer. In the second round of Pre-Qualifying, Vollbach took down UCLA's Azuma Visaya. After dropping the first set 3-6, he bounced back winning sets two and three 6-3 and 6-3.
Vollbach would be eliminated in the third round by Marko Miladinovic of Baylor. Miladinovic won that match 6-3, 6-4.
Iker Gaztambide Arrastia (Pamplona, Spain) was able to win the first set, 6-3, but dropped his Pre-Qualifying first round match in three sets to Brayden Michna of Texas A&M, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Christopher Norlin (Stockholm, Sweden) faced Virginia Tech's Alberto Orso. Norlin won the first set 6-2 but fell after dropping the next two sets 6-3 and 6-1.
Cheng En Tsai (Taipei, Taiwan) lost in three sets in the first round to Foster Rogers of Arkansas. Tsai fell behind after losing the opening set, 6-4, battled back to win the second, 6-2, before ultimately falling in the third, 6-2.
NIU will now prepare for its next tournament, the ITA Regional Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich. On Thursday, Oct. 19 through Monday, Oct. 23.
