Fourteen Huskies Place at Michigan State Open

EAST LANSING, Mich.—
Fourteen members of the Northern Illinois University Huskies wrestling squad placed at the Michigan State Open on Nov. 11. The Huskies competed in the Open and Freshman/Sophomore division today.
 
"We had a lot of good things happen today and some things we'd like to get another chance at," said head coach Ryan Ludwig. "It was a great day of competition. This team is young, driven, and progressing. We will be working hard this week to improve in critical areas of execution that will help us reach the next level."
 
In the open division at 125-pounds, Blake West (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) repeated his finish from last season, taking third place. West went 4-1 on the day, before winning the third place match by decision over Nolan Wertanen of Michigan (Dec 13-9).
 
At 141 pounds, Dylan Gvillo (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) took fourth place in the open division. Gvillo claimed a major decision victory, his first of the season, as he went 2-2 on the day.  
 
Matt Zuber (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) took home fourth place in the 184-pound weight class and opened his day with a win by major decision over Vaughn Petty of Findlay (Maj 14-2). Zuber went 4-2 on the day, with three wins coming via major decision.
 
Hayden Pummel (Indian Lake, Ohio/Indian Lake) took fourth at 174-pounds after receiving an opening round bye. Pummel went 4-2 on the day, before falling in the third place match in a 4-1 decision to Jospeh Walker of Michigan.
 
The 133 Open Division saw three Huskies place as Michael Kaminski (Lockport, Ill./Lockport), Nathaniel Genobana (Centerville, Ill./Centerville), Lucian Brink (Coshocton, Ohio/Coshocton) taking fourth, fifth, and sixth places respectively.
 
Going 4-2 on the day, Kaminski claimed two major decision victories, starting with Andrew Hampton of Michigan State (Maj 14-4). In the third-place match, Kaminski fell in sudden victory (-1) to Jace Koelzer of Oklahoma (SV-1 7-4).
 
Genobana took fifth place for the Huskies as he dropped his opening bout in a 2-0 decision to Koelzer of Oklahoma. Genobana added his first major decision victory of the season as he went 3-2 on the day. Genobana won by a 9-5 decision over Brink in the fifth place match as the Huskies were guaranteed fifth and sixth places.
 
On his road to sixth place, Brink opened his day with a bye before winning by a 9-5 decision over Sean Pierson of Princeton. Michigan's Dylan Ragusin won by a major decision over Brink in the semifinal round (Maj 13-5).
 
In the 197 Open Division, Carter Grewe (Colby, Wis./Colby) took sixth place. Grewe went 2-3 on the day, not including a bye round.  In the fifth place match, Michigan State's Kael Wisler won by a technical fall over Grewe (TF 16-0).
 
In the 285 Open Division, Jacobi Jackson (St. Louis, Mo./Desmet Jesuit) took sixth place and earned a victory by sudden victory during his day. Jackson went 2-3 on the day.  
 
In the freshman/sophomore division, Gavynn Carpenter (Hallsville, Mo./Hallsville) finished in second place at 157 pounds. Carpenter had two major decision victories on the day as he went 3-1 in competition. Carpenter fell in the championship match to Jacob Bostelman of Northwestern, falling by 4-3 decision.
 
In the 197-weight class of the freshman/sophomore division, Sean Carroll (Overland Park, Kan./St. Thomas Aquinas) took third place after receiving an opening round bye. Carroll went 3-1 on the day, including a sudden victory win over Michael Tal-Shahar of Wisconsin. Carroll won by decision over Demond Harrison from Albion College (Dec 10-4) in the third place match.
 
In the 149-weight class, Collin Arch (Palmyra, Mo./Palmyra) took third place after dropping his opening bout of the day to Gavin Brown of Ohio State (Dec 4-2).  Arch went 4-1 on the day, including a major decision win over Northwestern' Kai Neumark. Arch won by decision over Louden Stradling of Central Michigan (Dec 4-1) in the third place match.
 
Brett Smith (Troy, Mo./Buchanan) took home third place in the 157-weight class of the freshman/sophomore division and went 5-1 on the day. Smith had three major decision victories, a victory by fall, and a victory by technical fall on the day. In the third place match, Smtih won by technical fall over Conley of Michigan State (TF 17-1).
 
Tyler Martinez (Plano, Ill./Yorkville Christian) took home sixth place in the 165-weight class of the freshman/sophomore division and went 1-3 on the day, not including the opening round bye. Opening his day, Martinez won by major decision over Miles Curtis of Grand Valley State (Maj 9-1). Brady Benson of Michigan State defeated Martinez in the fifth place match, winning by a 7-2 decision.
 
The Huskies return to the mat on Nov. 18 as they compete at the Lindenwood Open.
