Huskies Head to Evanston for Monday Matchup with Northwestern

DEKALB, Ill. -- Less than 48 hours after a road victory at DePaul, the Northern Illinois University men's basketball team will travel to Evanston, Ill., for a meeting with Northwestern. Game time between the Huskies and Wildcats is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be available on Big Ten Network Plus, with the NIU radio broadcast available on 94.9 WDKB, along with the NIU Huskies app and the Varsity Network app.

The Huskies earned their fifth consecutive victory on Saturday night at DePaul. David Coit (Columbus, N.J./Atlantic Cape CC) netted a career-high 34 points, including eight triples, which tied a school record originally set by Donald Whiteside on March 5, 1990, against Wright State.

For the season, Coit is averaging 20.8 points per game, second-best in the Mid-American Conference and 23rd nationally. He is one of four Huskies averaging in double figures as Zarique Nutter (Newark, N.J./Clarendon College) is scoring 16.3 points per game, Philmon Gebrewhit (Boston, Mass./DePaul) adds 12.5 points per contest and Xavier Amos (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) is scoring 10.5 points per game.

NIU's 5-1 start is its best since the 2015-16 season, when the Huskies opened 7-0. NIU's five-game win streak is its longest since winning six-straight between Jan. 21-Feb. 7, 2020.

The Huskies currently rank fourth nationally in free throw attempts (29.5 per game), 14th in fastbreak points (18.5 per game), 15th in free throws made (19.7 per game), 21st in scoring (87.5 points per game), 27th in blocks per game (5.5), 41st in field goal percentage (49.2 percent) and 55th in rebounds (41.0 per game).

During the five-game win streak, NIU is averaging 91.0 points per game, shooting 52 percent from the field, including 38.8 percent from three-point range.

The Wildcats come into Monday's contest with a 4-1 overall record after suffering their first loss last time out to Mississippi State at the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament (Nov. 19). Three players are scoring in double figures for Northwestern, led by Boo Buie's 17.6 points per game. Brooks Barnhizer adds 16.4 points, and a team-high 8.4 rebounds, per game while Ryan Langborg is chipping in 12.0 points per contest.

This will be the 13th all-time meeting in the series between NIU and Northwestern, the Wildcats hold a 10-2 edge in the all-time series. Northwestern has won the last four against NIU with the last Huskie victory coming on Dec. 17, 1985. NIU's last win over a Big Ten foe came on Dec. 14, 1999, against Wisconsin.

Monday's trip to Northwestern will close a four-game road trip for NIU as the Huskies return home to host Indiana State on Tuesday, Dec. 5. Tickets for all Huskie basketball games are on sale now, including season tickets which start at just $80 for general admission season tickets in sections 115-118 (lower bowl baseline) with reserved lower bowl sideline season tickets available for just $120.
