Men's Tennis | November 6
Kalamazoo, Mich. – The Northern Illinois University men's tennis team competed in the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships from Friday, Nov. 3 through Sunday, Nov. 5.
Sophomore Iker Gaztambide Arrastia (Pamplona, Spain) paced the Huskies in the MAC Indoor Championships as he won the flight three singles title without dropping a set.
Arrastia won his quarterfinal match with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Ball State's Sajin Smith. In the semifinal and finals Arrastia won each set by a wide margin. He won 6-2, 6-2 over Toledo's Olivero Mattias and 6-3,6-3 over Western Michigan's Ashton Anderson in the flight three championship.
Meanwhile Arrastia also won the flight two doubles with sophomore Chris Norlin (Stockholm, Sweden). They picked up an 8-5 win over Ball State, an 8-3 win over WMU before getting a 8-5 win over the duo of Snaiders and Mitsakos from Buffalo in the championship.
The Huskies got a doubles championship in flight three as senior Armin Koschtojan (Halle (Salle), Germany) and freshman Saul Berdullas (Santiago de Compostela, Spain) won the title. The pair got a first-round bye before picking up an 8-1 semifinal win over a pair from Buffalo. That was followed by a close 8-6 win over Altman and Athreya from WMU and Buffalo. in the championship.
Norlin made it to the finals in the flight two singles bracket but fell in a close three set match to Toledo's Marko Galic 6-2,2-6,6-4.
In flight six Luke Welker advanced to the final but was defeated by Parrish Simmons from Ball State in the final by a score of 6-1,6-4.
The Huskies have wrapped up their fall competition and will return to the court as duals start on Sunday, January 14 in Starkville, Miss, against Chattanooga.
