NIU Falls to Illinois State, 6-1

Erika Dimitriev Earns the Point for NIU at No. 1 Singles

BLOOMINGTON, Ill.  – Northern Illinois University's Erika Dimitriev earned a hard-fought win at number one singles to score the Huskies' lone point of the match as NIU fell to Illinois State, 6-1, Wednesday at the Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington.
 
After winning the second set in comeback fashion, 7-5, Dimitriev and ISU's Tijana Zlatanovic went to the super tiebreaker to determine the match, which the Huskie sophomore won, 10-7, to improve her season mark to 4-1 at the No. 1 singles position.
 
Dimitriev and the Huskies' No. 3 doubles team of freshmen Jenna Horne and Isabella Righi provided the bright spots for NIU with the freshmen duo winning 6-4. ISU was able to win the doubles point, and take an early 1-0 lead in the match with a win in a tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles and a 6-1 victory at the No. 1 spot.
 
Illinois State clinched the match with straight set wins at No. 2, 6 and 4 singles, added the fifth point with a win at No. 5. NIU's Diana Lukyanova took her opponent to three sets before losing, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.
 
The Huskies' season record stands at 4-6 while Illinois State improved to 4-1.  NIU returns to action Friday, February 17 when they play host to Bradley at 3 p.m. in Chick Evans Field House.
