Ball State Shuts Out NIU

NIU Unable to Upset MAC Leader

WTEN23 - Reagan Welch intensity (4-14)
Scott Walstrom, NIU

Women's Tennis | April 16

DeKALB, Ill.  – Ball State showed why it is one of the top teams in the Mid-American Conference Sunday at the Nelson Tennis Center in Chick Evans Field House with a 7-0 win over the Northern Illinois University Huskies.

With the win, Ball State improved to 18-3 on the season and 7-1 in the MAC, while NIU fell to 12-14, 2-6 in the league.

After BSU won at No. 2 and 3 doubles to claim the doubles point, the Huskies started well at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Both Nataly Ninova at No. 3 and Reagan Welch at No. 4 won tiebreakers to take the opening sets but could not sustain the momentum through the rest of their matches. The match at No. 1 singles was tied 4-4 after the first eight games before BSU's Mariya Polishchuk took that set 6-4 and went on to win the match in two sets.

NIU closes out the regular season next weekend with a road match at Miami (Ohio) on Friday and will play host to Western Michigan next Sunday (April 23) in the season finale beginning at 1 p.m.
