Bloomington, Ind. - The Northern Illinois University women's soccer team fell 2-0 on the road at Indiana on Sunday night. Goals in the 36
th and 64
th minute helped the Hoosiers seal the victory.
"Going in as the underdog we wanted to make sure we competed and I thought we did that for the most part," NIU head coach
Michael O'Neill said. "We worked extremely hard and played on the front foot, when possible, created some really good opportunities against a Big Ten school."
After the Huskies got three shot attempts in the first 30 minutes, Indiana was able to control the game more and scored a goal on either side of halftime. Paige Webber scored both goals for the Hoosiers, her fourth and fifth of the season.
"It was a moment of growth and learning from the mistakes as we prepare for our conference season here in a couple of weeks," O'Neill said.
Huskie goalkeeper
Sadie McGill (Fort Worth, TX. / L.D. Bell) made seven saves across 83 minutes. Sophomore
Deighton Wamer (Oregon, OH. / Clay) came in for the last seven minutes of the match.
For Indiana the win went to Jamie Gerstenberg who did not face a shot on goal.
"I thought our goalkeeper Sadie did really well today. She was impressive, not just because of two or three big saves but her ability to command the 18-yard box. I thought she was a big standout today," O'Neill said.
NIU had five shot attempts and
Amber Best (Southfield, Mich. / Mercy) found the back of the net, only to have it ruled out on a close offside decision.Â
"We created some good chances, Amber had a few good chances including one that we felt was onside," O'Neill said. "She put the ball in the back of the net, it was disallowed, and she hit the bar as well. She caused some problems today against a good back line."
Up next, the Huskies will prepare to travel to Evansville to take on Southern Indiana at 1 p.m., on Sunday, September 10.
