Des Moines, Iowa – The Northern Illinois University men's tennis team defeated Washburn University 4-1 on Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa.
The Huskies dropped the first point against Washburn in doubles play, then responded by going 4-0 in singles to clinch the dual victory.
At No. 1 singles, senior Cheng En Tsai (Taipei, Taiwan/Abraham Baldwin) defeated Washburn's Tim Hammes in two sets by a score of 6-2, 6-4. Senior Mikael Vollbach) (Rothis, Austria) ran away with his win over Washburn's Sebastian Pjontek, 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 2 singles spot.
Sophomore Iker Gaztambide Arrastia (Pamplona, Spain) and freshman Saul Berdullas (Santiago de Compostela, Spain) sealed the Huskies win over Washburn as they earned straight-set wins at No. 3 and 4 singles, respectively. The two remaining matches were abandoned as the dual had been decided.
NIU improved to 2-1 on the young dual meet season with the win over Washburn. The Huskies are next in action at home in the Nelson Tennis Center versus North Dakota on Friday, January 26 at 1 p.m.
