OXFORD, Ohio—Ava Grevengoed (Shorewood, Ill./Joliet West) and
Nazli Güvener (Ankara, Turkey/Elvankent Sinar) led the Northern Illinois University Huskies Volleyball (4-23, 2-15 MAC) team with 17 kills each as they swept the RedHawks of Miami University (7-21, 1-16 MAC).
The match featured set scores of 25-18, 29-27, and 25-21 as the Huskies earned their first conference win since October 10, 2024.
The Huskies have now won the last five meetings with the RedHawks, including back-to-back sweeps.
Grevengoed recorded her 12th double-double of the season with 17 kills and 12 digs. Güvener recorded 12 kills and a hitting percentage of .552 as the duo led all players in kills.
"We have learned how to battle back like that all season and I'm especially proud of that fight tonight. We closed in a really big moment and the momentum carried with us to sweep," noted NIU head coach

Nikolette Nedic (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and Güvener collected the first three kills of the night as the Huskies took a 7-3 lead early. Miami's Caroline Cermack had consecutive kills to bring the game within two at 8-6 before a Huskie error trimmed the lead to one at 10-9. A kill by
Rylea Alvin (Randolph, Wis./Randolph) started a 5-2 run for the Huskies before Miami had three straight points before Güvener ended the scoring run. After trading points late, Grevengoed started the Huskies on a 6-1 run which featured a pair of kills from Güvener for the first set victory.
Alvin grabbed the first kill of the second set as the RedHawks took a 7-4 lead over the Huskies early. Following a Grevengoed kill, the RedHawks went on a 7-2 run for a 14-7 lead over the Huskies. Güvener marked consecutive kills as the RedHawks maintained their lead over NIU.
Savanah Brandt (Pearl City, Ill./Pearl City) teamed up with
Charli Atiemo (Milford, Mich./Farmington Hills Mercy) and Alvin for back-to-back blocks as the Huskies trailed by five at 17-12. Miami led by eight at 20-12 before Grevengoed started the Huskies on a 6-3 run featuring a pair of aces by Grevengoed. Brandt recorded her first kill of the night to tie the set at 23 all. The Huskies reached set point twice before Grevengoed had a pair of kills to take the second set in extra points.
Much like the end of the second set, the third set saw the team trade points as neither was able to establish an early lead. An attacking error by the Huskies gave the RedHawks a 9-7 lead before NIU scored three straight points for a 10-9 lead. Güvener recorded four kills in five points for the Huskies as NIU tied the set at 14. The Huskies would take a single point advantage as they traded points with Miami down the stretch. A Grevengoed kill tied the set at 18 as Miami tied the set for a final time at 19. Atiemo had a pair of kills in the closing points as the Huskies earned their second MAC sweep of the season on a 6-2 run.
