NIU Opens Two-Game Road Swing Against Cougars

DeKALB, IL - The Northern Illinois University women's basketball team returns to action Wednesday night when the Huskies travel to Chicago to take on the Chicago State Cougars at the Jones Convocation Center.

Tip-off is at 6 p.m. with the game broadcast on NEC Front Row. The radio broadcast will be available on NIUHuskies.com.

The Huskies enter Wednesday's game 1-2 on the early season after a 75-68 loss to St. Thomas on Nov. 10 at the NIU Convocation Center. NIU trailed by seven at halftime and got a scoring lift from Alecia Doyle (Carterville, Ill./SEMO) and Brooke Blumenfeld (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) combined for 19 points in the third quarter to tie the game at 54. Blumenfeld led all Huskies with 18 points and added seven rebounds, going 8-for-11 from the field.

Four Huskies scored in double figures against the Tommies. Doyle had a season-high 15 points with Laura Nickel (Marshall, Wis./Marshall HS) adding 12 points and seven rebounds. Brooke Stonebraker (Versailles, Ohio/Versailles) had 10 points and five rebounds. NIU shot 51.8 percent from the field after shooting just 33 percent in the first quarter.

The Huskies have been one of the most efficient shooting teams in the nation through three games this season. NIU enters Wednesday night's game ninth in the country in three-point shooting at 44.3 percent and leading the Mid-American Conference with nine three-pointers made per game. The Huskies are second in the MAC in field goal percentage at 45.8 percent.

NIU leads the all-time series against Chicago State 15-4 and has won seven straight against the Cougars. The Huskies won the last meeting 114-52 on Dec. 21, 2018 at the Convocation Center. Five Huskies scored in double figures in that game led by Mikayla Voigt's 29 points and eight assists.

Chicago State (0-6) is searching for its first win of the year after a 93-75 loss to Western Illinois Monday night. Junior center Josie Hill was a perfect 8-for-8 from the field in leading the Cougars with 19 points and seven rebounds. Asha Walker added 17 points. Walker leads Chicago State in scoring at 11.8 points per game.

The Huskies go back on the road on Sunday, Nov. 24 to take on the Milwaukee Panthers. Tip-off at the Klotsche Center is set for 12 p.m.
