Huskies Comeback Against CMU Falls Short

MOBILE, Al.—Dropping their final game of the South Alabama tournament, the Northern Illinois University Huskies (3-7) softball program fell to the Central Michigan University Chippewas (1-4), 6-5.

The Huskies recorded 11 hits to the Chippewas seven. Jenna Turner (Marengo, Ill./Marengo), Kiley Conner (St. John, Ind./Lake Central) and Ellis Erickson (Lutz, Fla./Freedom) were the only Huskies to record two hits in the contest.

"We knew going into the weekend, we were going to face some tough teams," said NIU head coach Christina Sutcliffe. "In order to compete for a MAC championship, we'll need to compete at a higher level. I have full confidence (that) we have the players to do that."

Leading off the Huskies, Turner opened with a single up the middle of the field. Turner crossed home plate for the Huskies on Conner's RBI single to right field. Opening the second inning, Erickson recorded her first hit of the game, a double to left field. Erickson scored on Trinity Jones Estrada's (Sylmar, Calif./John F. Kennedy) RBI single to put the Huskies up by two. Courtney James (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) added to the NIU lead in the third, scoring off Conner's sacrifice fly.

The Chippewas tied the game at two in the bottom of the second, scoring two runs off two hits. Continuing their scoring, the Chippewas added four runs in the bottom of the third to take a 6-3 lead over the Huskies.

Ally Rodriguez (Romeoville, Ill./Plainfield East) and Conner scored a run in the fourth and fifth innings respectively as the Huskie defense kept CMU from adding to their score.

The Huskies loaded the bases in the sixth, looking to score, but the Chippewas defense kept the Huskies from scoring.

The Huskie pitchers recorded four strikeouts and issued six walks in the contest.

Turner was named to the South Alabama All-Tournament team.

The Huskies and Chippewas open MAC play on March 15 as the Huskies travel to Mount Pleasant, Michigan.

The Huskies return to action at the Western Kentucky Hilltopper Spring Fling tournament, March 1-3. The Huskies will face off against Southern Illinois, Western Kentucky, and Dayton at the tournament.
