MISSOULA, Mt.—A strong outing by the Huskie pitchers and steady defense saw the Northern Illinois University Huskies softball program hold the University of Montana to four hits as the Huskies won 3-1 to close out their weekend in Montana.
With the win, the Huskies went 2-3 this weekend and move to 6-13 on the season.
"Our pitchers weren't letting outside factors into the game, and they were able to keep Montana off their game and cool their bats," said NIU head coach
Christina Sutcliffe. "Today, we had some great defensive plays throughout the game. All three elements of our game came together today, and we had a great team win."
After Montana got the first hit of the game in the bottom of the first,
Katy Ramage (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora Township) answered with a single in the second inning. Reaching base after being hit by the pitch,
Avery Carnahan (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) scored the first run of the game on a fielding error by Montana.
Montana tied the game at one in the bottom of the third inning, on a home run to center field in what would be their only run of the game.
Courtney James (Fishers, Ind./Fishers), who had a single in the second inning to send Carnahan around, opened the fifth inning with a single to left-center field. James scored the second run for the Huskies on an
Isabel Shafer (Dalton City, Ill./Mt. Zion) RBI double.
Coming into pinch run in the sixth inning,
Brianna Pechman (West Chicago, Ill./West Chicago Community) scored the winning run on a Carnahan RBI single.
Madison Carlson (South Beloit, Ill./South Beloit) and
Lily Cassell (LaGrange, Ohio/Keystone) split pitching duties for the Huskies quieted the Grizzly bats, that had recorded 21 hits against the Huskies in the prior two games this weekend. Carlson issued one walk and struck out three batters as Cassell struck out two batters. The duo held Montana without a hit in the final three frames of the game.
The Huskies did not record a stolen base for the first time this weekend and only the sixth time this season.
The Huskies return to action on March 15-16 as they open Mid-American Conference play. The Huskies open MAC play at Central Michigan in a three-game series starting at 2 p.m. on March 15.
