Huskies Fall at Purdue, 11-1

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue expanded a 3-1 lead after four innings to 11-1 with three runs in the fifth and five in the sixth en route to a midweek victory over the Northern Illinois University Huskies Wednesday at Alexander Field.

The Huskies (5-12) scratched out eight hits in the midweek matchup, three by leadoff hitter Eric Erato (Sussex, Wis./Sussex Hamilton HS). NIU left nine stranded and struck out nine times.

"We got a good start from [starting pitcher] Dom [Hassan], he was on a pitch count coming back from injury," said NIU head coach Ryan Copeland. "It was a real ballgame through the fourth or fifth inning and unfortunately, the second half of the game wasn't very good, similar to the game at Iowa a few weeks ago. We left a lot of guys on base, had opportunities to score more runs and just couldn't do that."

Purdue (13-4) used a pair of singles and a Huskie error on a hot shot to third base to take a 1-0 lead in the third. NIU came back to tie the game in their half of the fourth. Third baseman Aaron Harper (Hemet, Calif./Hemet HS/Mt. San Jacinto College) doubled with one out and came around to score on freshman Charlie Parcell's (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West HS) single.

The Boilermakers took the lead for good with two runs in their half of the fourth. After the first two batters reached on a hit by pitch and a walk off NIU reliever Sam Pederson (0-1), back-to-back singles by Purdue's Ty Gill and Joe Stevens resulted in two runs and a 3-1 Boiler lead.

Purdue used three extra base hits to add three runs in the fifth and extend the lead to 6-1.  With one on, Connor Caskenette homered to left and Keenan Spence and Gill hit back-to-back doubles.

The Boilermakers, who finished with 16 hits off of eight NIU pitchers, scored five runs in the sixth. After a one-out walk, back-to-back home runs by Luke Gaffney and Logan Sutter accounted for three runs. Caskenette doubled and after moving to third on a single, scored on a Spence sac fly. Gill, who had three hits and three RBI to lead Purdue, drove in Couper Cornblum with an RBI single for the home team's final run.

Purdue totaled 16 hits off of eight NIU pitchers. Aaron Suval, the second of five pitchers for Purdue, earned the win (2-0).

NIU returns to Mid-American Conference play this weekend with a three-game set at Akron beginning Friday at 1:05 p.m. (CT).
