AKRON, Ohio—Recording a season-high 12 hits, the Northern Illinois University Huskie softball program fell in the final game of the series to the University of Akron Zips, 7-6.
With the loss, the Huskies fall to 7-18 on the season and 1-5 in Mid-American Conference action.
"We have a lot of work to do to make up ground in the MAC, but I'm confident that this team can do it," said NIU head coach
Christina Sutcliffe. "We played much better offensively today and are right there. I look forward to watching us bounce back."
Caitlyn Shumaker (Bellefontaine, Ohio/Bellefontaine) started the second inning off strong with her first home run of the season to put the Huskies up 1-0.
Avery Carnahan (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) reached on an error by the Zips before scoring on
Ellis Erickson's (Lutz, Fla./Freedom) RBI single.
The Zips answered Shumaker's home run with a 2-run home run in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game at two.
Mirroring the first inning, the Huskies opened the third inning with a pair of hits as runners advanced to scoring position. A
Kiley Conner (St. John, Ind./Lake Central) 2 RBI single brought home two Huskie runners as NIU doubled their lead at 4-2.
Katy Ramage (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora Township) started the fifth frame of play with a single before stealing second base. Ramage scored for the second time in the game on Carnahan's RBI groundout.
The Zips had a big fifth inning, scoring five runs to take a 7-5 lead over NIU which included a 3-run home run.
Madison Carlson (South Beloit, Ill./South Beloit) scored the final run of the game for the Huskies in the top of the seventh on Carnahan's RBI sacrifice fly as the Huskies dropped their fifth straight game.
Huskie Notes
- Erickson recorded her fifth consecutive game with a hit and her fourth game of the last five with multiple hits.
- Jenna Turner (Marengo, Ill./Marengo) had back-to-back multi-hit games for the second time this season.
- Ramage has scored in consecutive games four prior times this season.
- Ramage had her eighth multi-hit game of the season.
- With her next stolen base, Shumaker will become the NIU career stolen bases leader.
The Huskies return to action in their home opener on March 26 at 2 p.m. hosting DePaul University at Mary M. Bell Field.
