Game Recap: Softball |

Erickson Hits Seventh Home Run of Season as Huskies Fall to WMU

KALAMAZOO, Mich.— Ellis Erickson (Lutz, Fla./Freedom) had the lone run of the day as the Northern Illinois University Huskies softball squad was swept in a midweek Mid-American Conference doubleheader by the Broncos of Western Michigan University. The Huskies fell 2-0 in the first game before dropping the second game 2-1.

The Huskies fall to 12-27 on the season and 5-12 in MAC play.

"We knew Western's pitcher was going to be good as they are leading in the MAC for ERA," said NIU head coach Christina Sutcliffe. "We have to battle a little better against good pitchers in this league. We had some great performances out of our pitchers that went in today. We have to stay true to our defensive plan and work on the little things. We are going to keep a narrow focus and take it one inning at a time."

Game One Recap (NIU 0, WMU 2)

Jenna Turner (Marengo, Ill./Marengo) recorded the first hit of the game, a single before grabbing two stolen bases in the top of the first inning.

Western Michigan singled in the bottom of the second as the next nine batters for each side were retired. The Broncos doubled in the bottom of the sixth frame to collect their second hit of the game.

Danielle Stewart (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) doubled to left field in the top of the seventh for the final hit of the game for the Huskies.

The Broncos hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh for the walk-off win.

Stewart pitched the entire game for the Huskies, recording four strikeouts.

Game Two Recap (NIU 1, WMU 2)

Madison Mathews (Yuma, Ariz./Cibola) singled to the shortstop in the top of the second for the first hit of the game for the Huskies. Avery Carnahan reached on a fielder's choice before recording her 14th stolen base of the season.

The Broncos had a two-run home run in the bottom of the second frame, their second of the day to take a 2-0 lead over the Huskies.

Erickson hit her seventh home run of the season in the top of the third to put the Huskies on the board.

In the fifth frame, Courtney James (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) singled to left field before making her way to third base with back-to-back stolen bases. Brianna Pechman (West Chicago, Ill./West Chicago Community) added the fourth stolen base of the game for the Huskies.

The Huskies would reach base in the sixth and seventh innings but were left stranded as WMU swept the series.
