Box Score OXFORD, Ohio – The Northern Illinois University women's soccer team earned a 1-1 tie against Miami on Thursday (Sept. 19) in the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams.
NIU (6-1-2, 0-0-1 MAC) took the lead in the 46
th minute off of a goal from
Tyra King (Menifee, Calif./Metea Valley). Miami (4-1-3, 0-0-1 MAC) evened the score at one in the 75
th minute as both teams earned one point.
"It was a really tough contest as we expected," NIU head coach
Michael O'Neill said. "Miami made it very difficult on us. They are a very aggressive team so we knew we were in for a battle. There were times in the game where we looked really good and earned a lot of space. They forced pressure and took advantage of some of the mistakes we did make."
King's goal is her sixth of 2024 and
Kelsi McLaughlin (Greenfield, Ind./Illinois State) recorded her third assist of the season.
"We won a free kick from the (second half) kickoff and played it in short to Kelsi (McLaughlin)," O'Neill said. "Kelsi put the ball in and Tyra (King) made a great run across the box to get the ball and score. It was a very good goal from the wide area and great to see Tyra score again."
Miami has only been defeated at home twice in MAC play in the last two seasons.
"It's a very difficult place to play so I am proud of the team's effort," O'Neill said. "We will take the point and head back to our place on Sunday against Ohio."
The Huskies controlled the possession in the match 58-42.
Ary Purifoy (Machesney Park, Ill./Oklahoma State) made eight saves to earn the draw for the Huskies.
NIU will return home on Sunday, Sept. 22, as the Huskies host Ohio. Kickoff against the Bobcats is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT and admission to NIU soccer matches is free of charge.
