Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Huskies Fall to St. Thomas

ST. PAUL—Ava Grevengoed (Shorewood, Ill./Joliet West) recorded her fourth consecutive double-double with 11 kills and 16 digs as the Northern Illinois University Huskies volleyball team (1-4) dropped a four-set match to the University of St. Thomas Tommies this evening.

The Huskies posted set scores of 21-25, 25-19, 19-25, and 17-25.

Crew Hoffmeier (Louisville, Ky./Assumption) and Charli Atiemo (Milford, Mich./Farmington Hills Mercy) were named to the All-Tournament Team.

"We have to find a way to execute the game plan consistently over three sets. When it's there, we look really good. Finding that consistency is the goal," said head coach Sondra D'Amore. "(We are) continuing to develop our attack and find ways to get first ball kills (that) will help us moving forward. The goal is to continue to find ways to play cleaner."

Game Recap

Nazli Güvener (Ankara, Turkey/Elvankent Sinar) and Atiemo teamed up for a block as the Huskies led 3-1 to start the first set. The first set would see five additional tie scores after the Tommies tied the set up at three. A Grevengoed kill brought the Huskies with one at 12-11 as the Tommies began to extend their lead on the next point. A pair of errors by the Tommies gave the Huskies a late 18-17 lead before a Tommie kill put them back ahead for the final time. Grevengoed recorded the final kill of the first set as the Huskies fell 21-25.

Atiemo and Güvener had the first three Huskie points of the second set, with each recording a kill and teaming up for a block. An Ella Strausberger (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) service ace started the Huskies on a 7-0 run as they took an 11-2 lead. The Tommies came back within six before Rylea Alvin and Atiemo had consecutive kills for the Huskies. A trio of attacking error by the Tommies put NIU up 18-9 as the Huskies offense had six kills in the closing points of the second set to make it 1-1.

It was a back-and-forth battle for the Huskies in the third set as neither team could establish more than a one-point advantage early until an attacking error by the Tommies put the Huskies up 5-3. The Tommie battled back and went on a 7-3 run to take a 13-9 lead over the Huskies. A service error by the Tommies halted a Tommie run and was followed by a Güvener kill. The Huskies strung together a 7-2 run which saw kills from four different Huskies. The Tommies put a stop to the late attack by the Huskies, taking the third set 25-19.

Atiemo ended a 5-0 start by the Tommies in the fourth set with a kill as the Tommies took a 6-1 lead to start action. Grevengoed and Güvener recorded a pair of kills as the Tommies built their lead out to 17-10. The Huskies had four kills in a row, including a pair of consecutive kills from Grevengoed but the Tommie defense shut the Huskies down. Atiemo accounted for two of the final kills of the game for the Huskies as St. Thomas defeated the Huskies 3-1.
