First Half Goals Lead Ohio Past NIU

ATHENS, Ohio – Two goals in the opening 25 minutes helped propel Ohio to a 3-0 victory over the Northern Illinois University women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 19) at Chessa Field. Jaimason Brooker opened the scoring in the 10th minute, and Quintin Tostevin added the second in the 24th, Tostevin added another goal in the second half.

NIU goalkeeper Lauren Pearson (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) made a season-high eight saves in the contest.

"We just weren't good enough today," said NIU head coach Michael O'Neill. "First half, first 25 minutes, we weren't at the races, they scored two goals, and we had a mountain to climb. Not much tactical or matchup wise, I just don't think we were ready to compete, which is a shame because that hasn't been an issue this year, or for a good few games."

Ohio (4-8-5, 2-4-4 MAC) opened the scoring in the 10th minute as Brooker got the opening goal into the upper left corner of the goal for the hosts.

In the 24th minute, the Bobcats doubled their advantage as Tostevin found the upper corner of the net from outside the box to double the advantage for Ohio.

The hosts had another chance four minutes later as Pearson came up with the save on a chance by Kate Robinson. Pearson made another save in the 31st minute on an effort from Lillian Weller.

Pearson was called into action once more in the final minute of the opening half to stop a shot from Anna Burchett as Ohio took a 2-0 lead into halftime.

Tyra King (Menifee, Calif./Metea Valley) forced the first save from Ohio goalkeeper Celeste Sloma in the 51st minute. Three minutes later, Kelsi McLaughlin (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield Central) had a chance for NIU (4-8-3, 2-5-2 MAC) that was off target.

Just after the hour mark, Iro Fakinou hit the post for the Bobcats as the lead for Ohio remained 2-0. Two minutes later, Pearson came up with a save on a chance for Brooker.

Ohio added a third goal with 10 minutes remaining as Tostevin nodded home her second goal of the contest from a corner by Brooker to give the hosts a 3-0 victory.

NIU will be back in action next Sunday, Oct. 26, when the Huskies travel to Ypsilanti, Mich., to take on Eastern Michigan. Kickoff against the Eagles is scheduled for 12 p.m. CT.
