Women's Volleyball | October 22
DeKALB, Ill.—Beginning a three-game road swing, the Northern Illinois University Huskies volleyball team (10-8, 3-6 MAC) will travel to the University of Akron Zips (9-11, 2-7 MAC) for a pair of games this weekend, October 24-25.
The Huskies and Zips are set to have first serve at 5 p.m. CT on October 24 before concluding the series at 3 p.m. on October 25.
Previewing Akron
The Zips have collected conference wins over Western Michigan and Ohio this season, splitting the series with Western Michigan.
Offensively, Delaney Gash and Maureen Mathews led the Zips with 3.79 and 3.16 kills per set. Jordyn Aeschliman is the third Akron player with over two kills per set, averaging 2.39 per set.
Behind the service line, Vanessa Del Real leads the team and the league with 35 total service aces this season. Del Real is averaging 3.80 digs per set to lead the defensive efforts for the Zips. On the block, Chidera Ozoh leads the team with 84 blocks, averaging 1.05 per set. '
Akron took the series last season although NIU holds the series lead, 30-13.
Huskie Leaders
Emma McCartney (Cleveland, Ohio/Chadron) is leading the Huskies with 219 kills this season, an average of 3.13 per set.
Ava Grevengoed (Shorewood, Ill./Joliet West) is the second Huskies above 200 kills, averaging 2.82 per set. McCartney is in the top-10 of the MAC with kills per set.
It's a block party for
Rylea Alvin (Randolph, Wis./Randolph),
Autumn Flynn (Luxemburg, Wis./Luxemburg-Casco), and
Alexa Hayes (Magnolia, Texas/Magnolia West) as they've combined for 98 blocks. Alvin is in the top-10 in the MAC for blocks per set.
Jordyn Tynsky (Denton, Texas/Denton Guyer) leads the dig efforts for the Huskies with 222 this season, an average of 3.47 per set. Tynsky also lands in the top-10 in the MAC.
Milestone on the Horizon
Sophomore
Ella Strausberger (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) is 36 assists away from eclipsing the 1,000 career mark for total assists in her career. Strausberger, who has played in 70 sets for NIU this season, is averaging 5.16 assists per set.
Last Time on the Court
Three members of the Huskies volleyball team recorded double-doubles in a five-set thriller against Toledo. The Huskies saw three sets feature extra points as they fell at home.
Grevengoed, McCartney, and
Kylie Schulze (Wonder Lake, Ill./Woodstock North) all recorded double-doubles in the loss. McCartney matched her career-best 20 kills and set a new career best in digs while Schulze had a new best in digs and assists in the match.
