This Week in Huskie Athletics – Oct. 6, 2025

DEKALB, Ill. – The NIU volleyball team opens this week in Huskie Athletics with a Tuesday night contest at home against Western Michigan. Men's and women's soccer will also face the Broncos this week while the Huskie football team travels to Ypsilanti to take on Eastern Michigan.

NIU football continues conference play Saturday, traveling to Eastern Michigan. The Huskies dropped the conference opener against Miami last weekend at home, 25-14. Freshman quarterback Brady Davidson made his first career start in the game and connected with tight end Jake Appleget for a touchdown in the first quarter. 

Eastern Michigan (1-5) ranks second in the MAC in total offense with 377.5 yards per game and quarterback Noah Kim leads the conference in passing yards with 222.7 yards per game. NIU has won the last three games against the Eagles and 14 of the last 16 dating back to 2008.

Huskie volleyball returns to Victor E. Court for a midweek matchup against the Broncos of Western Michigan on Tuesday, October 7 at 6 p.m. before traveling to Bowling Green for games on Thursday and Friday, October 9 and 10.
 
Ava Grevengoed and Emma McCartney lead the Huskies offense with over 2.90 kills per set as Autumn Flynn and Jordyn Tynsky lead the Huskies behind the service line with a combined 40 service aces. With 47 blocks, Rylea Alvin leads the Huskies in that defensive category while Tynsky has 3.65 digs per set. Alvin and Tynsky are in the top-10 in the MAC for blocks per set, aces per set, and digs per set respectively.

Sunday, Oct. 12: at Kent State, 12 p.m.

Following a weekend split against Central Michigan and Buffalo, the Huskie women's soccer team welcomes MAC leading Western Michigan to DeKalb on Thursday (Oct. 9) before traveling to Kent State on Sunday (Oct. 12). Goalkeeper Lauren Pearson recorded her second shutout of the season in the win at Central Michigan, making a pair of saves. 

The Broncos come into the weekend 9-2-1 overall, 5-0-1 in league play, Western Michigan leads the conference standings by a point over Buffalo. Kent State is 5-4-4 overall, 3-2-1 in the league and is tied for fourth with 10 points.  

Men's Soccer

After coming from behind late to down Bradley courtesy of goals from Martin Montoya and Vance Sheffield, the NIU men's soccer team travels to Western Michigan on Saturday (Oct. 11). Sheffield's game-winning goal was his fifth goal of the season, which is tied for the fourth-most among freshmen in the country. It is also the most goals by a Huskie freshman since Nick Markanich scored eight in 2018. 

NIU is tied with Belmont for second in the Missouri Valley Conference with four points, Evansville leads the league with six points. Western Michigan comes into the week with a 2-8-1 record, including a 0-1-1 mark in league play, and will take on Detroit on Wednesday before hosting the Huskies.
