DeKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University doubles team of Reagan Welch and Jenna Horne earned Women's Tennis Doubles Team of the Week honors from the Mid-American Conference on Monday after extending their unbeaten record to 8-0 this season with a pair of wins last Saturday.
 
Welch, a senior from Greenbrier, Tenn. (Aaron Academy) and Horne, a junior from Glenview, Ill. (Glenbrook South HS) cruised to a 6-1 win over Valparaiso's Jolene Fernandes and Lillian Kelly in the first action of the day at the Nelson Tennis Center, helping NIU win the doubles point en route to a 4-0 victory by the Huskies.
 
In the afternoon match versus Lewis, Welch and Horne fought off five match points to defeat Sreevally Medishetti and Benedetta Luccone, 8-6, in the tiebreaker to secure the doubles point for the Huskies.  As a team, NIU went on to win the match, 7-0.
 
Welch and Horne are the first NIU doubles team to receive MAC weekly honors this year. Three different Huskie singles players have collected MAC Singles Player of the Week recognition – freshman Lucia Yecora (Feb. 3), freshman Irmak Budak (Jan. 27) and junior Nataly Ninova (Jan. 20).
 
The Huskies (8-2) travel to Sioux Falls, South Dakota next Friday (February 21) for a pair of matches versus South Dakota at 10 a.m. and Sioux Falls at 2 p.m.
