Women's Tennis | February 3
DeKALB, Ill. – For the third time in as many weeks, a Northern Illinois University women's tennis player was honored as the Mid-American Conference Singles Player of the Week as freshman
Lucia Yecora was named a co-winner of the weekly award Monday (Feb. 3). The weekly winners are selected by the league's women's tennis coaches.
After narrowly losing the first set, 7-5, in her match against Wisconsin's Ellison Reynoldson in Madison on Friday, Yecora came back to win the second set 6-4 and then handily won the 10-point super tiebreaker, 10-3, to account for the Huskies' point in the match against the Badgers.
In the first match of the day, Yecora, playing at No. 4 singles, split sets with Emilia Durska of Milwaukee, losing the first set, 6-3, before coming back to win the second, 6-4. The match was then called after the Huskies secured the win over the Panthers.
Yecora, a native of Seville, Spain, shared the award with Toledo's Audrey Moutama. Yecora is the third different Huskie to be named MAC Singles Player of the Week this season as fellow freshman
Irmak Budak (Jan. 27) and junior
Nataly Ninova (Jan. 20) previously earned the recognition.
With the win versus Wisconsin, Yecora is 4-0 in completed singles matches this season. The Huskies split their matches with Milwaukee and Wisconsin last Friday in Madison and are 5-2 on the year. NIU takes on Western Illinois Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. at the Nelson Tennis Center.
