DeKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University women's tennis team earned its sixth win of the 2025 dual match season with a 7-0 blanking of Western Illinois Saturday at the Nelson Tennis Center at Chick Evans Field House.  The Huskies have not allowed their opponent to win a match in any of their six wins on the year; NIU is 6-2 overall.

"It was a tough battle today. WIU is a good team and has really improved tremendously from a year ago," said NIU head coach Eric Burns. "The story of the match was the doubles. We were fortunate to pull out the doubles point, which led to a lot of positive momentum heading into singles."

The Huskies' No. 3 doubles team of Jenna Horne and Reagan Welch continued their undefeated spring campaign with a 6-4 win, and Maria Dzemeshkevich and Nataly Ninova clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 victory at the No. 1 spot.

NIU's singles wins all came in straight sets. Saturday's line-up featured three freshmen as Irmak Budak improved her record to 5-1 with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles, Lucia Yecora kept her singles record unblemished at 5-0 with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4 and Theodora Kousiou made her spring debut with a 6-2, 6-0 win at the No. 6 position.

"In singles, we won a couple of tough first sets that catapulted us to the win," Burns said. "We were able to welcome Isabella Righi and Theodora Kousiou back to the singles line up today and both performed very well in routine wins. The freshmen continue to play very well and have been a huge key to our early success. All in all it was an excellent performance and win today."

NIU is home again next Saturday, February 15 with a pair of matches at the Nelson Tennis Center. The Huskies will take on Valparaiso at 10 a.m., followed by a match versus Lewis University at 3 p.m. Admission is free and the public is invited.
