DeKALB, Ill. – Northern Illinois University women's tennis senior
Maria Dzemeshkevich was named the Mid-American Conference co-singles player of the week on Monday following her strong performance at Marquette last Wednesday.
In her lone match of the week, Dzemeshkevich, who is in her first season at NIU after transferring from the University of Houston, defeated Marquette's Tiera Jarmond at No. 1 singles, 7-5, 6-2.
Her victory, which improved her season dual match record to 10-3, helped NIU defeat the Golden Eagles, 5-2. NIU is now 12-3 on the season.
Dzemeshkevich is the fourth NIU player to be named MAC Singles Player of the Week as a Huskie has won the award five times in 2025. Freshman
Irmak Budak has claimed two weekly honors this season (Jan. 27, March 3), while freshman
Lucia Yecora (Feb 3.) and junior
Nataly Ninova (Jan 20.) have each earned the honor once. The doubles team of senior
Reagan Welch and junior
Jenna Horne picked up the MAC weekly doubles honor on February 17.
With six total MAC weekly honors already this season (5 singles, 1 doubles), NIU has tied for the most MAC weekly honors in one year in school history. It is also the most different Huskies players to earn the award in a season.
The Huskies return home this week to open conference play at the Nelson Tennis Center on Sunday, March 16th at 1 p.m. against Eastern Michigan, followed by a match against Wisconsin-Whitewater at 5 p.m. to conclude the home doubleheader.
