Huskies Fall at Ball State, 5-2

Yecora, Kousiou Record Singles Wins

DeKALB, Ill. – Northern Illinois University freshmen Lucia Yecora and Theodora Kousiou recorded straight set singles wins to account for NIU's points in the Huskies' 5-2 loss at Ball State Friday afternoon in Muncie.
 
The loss evened NIU's record in Mid-American Conference dual matches to 1-1 on the year. The Huskies are 14-4 overall.  Ball State improved to 8-4, 2-0 MAC.
 
Ball State took the doubles point to open the match, winning 6-1 at the No. 2 position and clinching the point with a 7-2 tiebreaker win at No. 1.  The Cardinals claimed straight set wins at No. 1 and No. 5 singles to take a 3-0 lead, then clinched the match by a 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 score at No. 3 singles.
 
Yecora came back after dropping the first set, 6-3, versus Ball State's Chloe Brown, to take the next two sets 6-3, 7-5 and improve her season singles record to 11-1. Kousiou scored a 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) win at No. 6 singles. Fellow rookie Irmak Budak took her opponent at No. 2 singles to a 10-point super tiebreaker third set before falling 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7).
 
NIU's MAC road weekend continues as the Huskies take on Western Michigan on Sunday, March 23 in Kalamazoo. The match will begin at Noon (CT) at the West Hills Athletic Club.  Admission is free with live scoring available at wmustats.com.
